KIYOKO TOKUTOMI (1928â2003). A prominent Japanese-American haiku poet and haiku teacher. She was born in Japan but lived most of her adult life in Southern California with her husband, the late haiku master Kiyoshi. Together they created the active American haiku group, the Yuki Teikei Haiku Society (based in California), which adheres to the traditional 5-7-5 syllable count for English haiku. Her bilingual collection is Kiyokoâs Sky: The Haiku of Kiyoko Tokutomi, translated by Patricia J. Machmiller and Fay Aoyagi.
